THE ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized, compact breed of gundog in the Spaniel family traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game. It is closely related to the English Cocker and Welsh Springer Spaniels. Originally the two varieties were interbred, and progeny identified depending on their size as either Springers or Cockers. Historically Spaniels were used as hunting, or sporting dogs, for flushing game and the term Springer derived from how the dogs would flush, or spring, birds into the air. At first glance English Springer Spaniel is similar to the English Cocker Spaniel although slightly larger in size.

English Springer Spaniels is a medium sized dog and comes in a variety of colour combinations. They can be black and white, liver and white, or either of these with tan markings also known as tricolour. The coat is medium-length, which can be flat or wavy. The eyes are either hazel or brown, depending on the colour of the coat. Like many gundogs they have a double coat which protects them in the field and is waterproof, the coat should appear clean and shiny. Springers shed moderately all year long and should be brushed regularly to remove dead hair and tangles. Their floppy ears can be prone to infections so must be checked and cleaned at least once a week. The hair inside the ears as well as between the toes should be trimmed regularly.

Springer Spaniels are a friendly, affectionate dog with a gentle nature. They are agile, playful and energetic, as well as being quick to learn and eager to please. They enjoy the company of people and get along well with children and other pets, which makes them a ideal family pet. As a medium sized breed they can live in smaller dwellings but do require regular exercise and are more likely to wag than bark at strangers, so do not make very good guard dogs. Because of their sociable nature, they can get bored if left alone for long periods of time which can lead to destructive and mischievous behaviour.

English Springer Spaniels require owners who are prepared to spend time entertaining them. They require walking every day and love to go for a run or a swim. Because of their agile mind and body, they are easily trained and are well suited to many popular dog activities and sports including agility, tracking, hunting and obedience.

English Springer Spaniels have a lifespan of around 12 to 14 years.
